Florida has one of the most diverse ecosystems in the United States and the Everglades National Park, a swampy area in the south of Florida, is completely unique in the world and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nature, Wildlife, and Outdoor Activities
Everglades Swamp Walk: The Everglades, although it’s a swamp, is actually quite inviting, with cool and clear waters and a huge range of wildlife spottings. These are perfect for everyone in the family, from Grandma to the toddlers because the walks are guided and well-structured. Swamp walks are held every Saturday and I suggest booking ahead!
Bioluminescent Kayaking: Surprisingly off the tourist path, Titusville has some neat sites for the outdoor enthusiasts traveling to the state. Nighttime paddle trips take you out into the middle of bioluminescent organisms that glow blue with any movement in the water (like your kayak paddle!). It’s a really fun activity in the summer and with skydiving and other tourist activities in Titusville, you can make a weekend of it!
Paddleboard at Coastal Dune Lake: Located in Northwest Florida, the coastal dune lakes are unique to this region and some of the only dune lakes on earth! Consider a good option for paddleboarding at the BoatHouse, located at the WaterColor Inn and Resort; if it’s a warm and sunny day you certainly won’t be the only ones on the lake!
Wildlife Drives
Considerations for wildlife sightings should be made, there are never any guarantees when you go on nature drives and hikes, but a good rule of thumb is that wildlife and animals are most active during early morning and evening hours since they sleep during the heat of the day!
Sanibel Island Wildlife Drive: Bird lovers will love driving through the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. The refuge is home to the world’s largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem and is also a migratory stopping point for hundreds of different species of birds. Warning: Closed on Fridays.
Black Point Wildlife Drive: Located in Titusville and very close to the Kennedy Space Center, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to birds, fish, and a wide range of wildlife.
Unique Animal Experiences
Dolphin Research Center: (Marathon Key, The Keys) Operating as a nonprofit, this Center offers some of the neatest animal encounters in the state. They are home to about 15 dolphins and have walk-in programs where you can kiss a sea lion or learn how to communicate with dolphins!
